This was created in dedication to the photographer Vivian Maier, a street photographer from the 1950s - 1990s. Vivian's work was discovered at an auction here in Chicago where she resided most of her life. Her discovered work includes over 100,000 mostly medium format negatives, thousands of prints, and a ton of undeveloped rolls of film. I have approximately 90-95% of the work.

I thought I would bring them both together and give them too some points to  other deviants!!

I know alot of people like the maths so here are my workings:

Welcome to the brand new (seriously) bi-weekly blog about what to photograph on the streets of London. This week we'll be focusing on the upcoming green bonanza that is - St Patrick's Day!

What is St Patrick's Day?

St Patrick's Day is a yearly event which celebrates the most famous saint in Ireland - Saint Patrick (surprise!) on March 17th because of how busy mankind is, the celebrations usually begin the weekend before (March 13th/14th) and end the weekend after (March 20th/21st). The festival originates from Ireland but as the Irish spread across the globe so did the festival, The day is now a national holiday of Ireland: a bank holiday in Northern Ireland and a public holiday in the Republic of Ireland. It is also widely celebrated in Great Britain, the United States, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and Montserrat. There are also celebrations in Buenos Aires and Paris.

What's in it for us Photographers?

Well as well as the great crowd photos that can be achieved at well known celebrations, St Patrick's Day allows you take pictures filled with green!, thanks to shamrock ,St Patrick's Day is a festival filled with the fresh and vibrant colour making it a real treat for photographers.
The festival will often fill the streets of London and shops and streets transform into whole new subjects allowing you to see London in a brand new light!

St Patrick's Day Parade and Festival

   Where: The parade starts at Piccadilly
   When: Sunday 14th of March 12noon-6pm
   What: The parade of Irish floats, including new eco-friendly rickshaw floats, begins its amble from Green Park, along Piccadilly and down to Trafalgar Square at 12noon with musicians, dancers and community representatives. In Trafalgar Square there will be music and dance on stage, as well as a children's corner featuring storytelling, shadow animation and other activities.

How to photograph

There are two main ways of getting great St Patrick's Day pictures :

1. Be in the parade and take pictures as it moves through London, from this angle you'll get shots of individual party goers with a background of recurring green. For this option you'll want to get there on time and pick out the real hard-core Irishmen mainly because their portraits will be more interesting and eye catching.

2. Wait for the 100,000 people to hit Trafalgar square, this is good if you don't want to be up to early as they don't reach Trafalgar square till later on in the afternoon. If your opting for this choice be sure to bring a Tripod as a slow exposure here will really look great, just imagine a sea of green squashed around the circular shapes of the two fountains.
